Kandu went out to a great dog show last week. Click here to see a video clip: www.nutsformutts.org. He ended up winning Best Kisser and Best Physically Challenged and then some... and he had a great time. Click here to see some photos: www.tcphotodesign.com

Kandu's adventure started when Laura went to the shelter in Lamar only to find poor old Kandu shuffling around on the cement floor. He was just hoping that she had come to save him. Needless to say, she took the poor little guy to her house so he could be fed and warm while she searched for a forever home. Laura took Kandu to be vaccinated and then she got him neutered - a favor that he would have liked to do without!

It was discovered that Kandu had an old yellow dog named Sandy that was dumped at the shelter with him. Of course, we new that she couldn't be left behind. EAPL found a foster where Kandu and Sandy could stay while we raise funds for their medical care as well as some type of device that would lift Kandu's little head up off of the ground.

With the help of Robin, Betsy and Laura Kandu and Sandy made it to Denver where they could stay with an EAPL foster while they looked for some mode of getting Kandu's chest up off of the ground and above all, a forever home for both of them. He was happy to be where the bed was soft and there was plenty of food but the mountain terrain was not a fun place for a guy with no legs to get around. Kandu never complained - his spirit is just amazing.

Martin agreed to take this little guy under the watchful wing of OrthoPets. Since his company manufactures prosthetics and braces for disadvantaged pets, it seemed like the perfect place for Kandu to be. Kandu's name was changed to Kandu and he started on his journey to a new life.

Kandu moved downtown to stay with his friend Martin and a generous family that has agreed to lend a hand. They will observe the way that Kandu gets around so they can fabricate a device that will work with him. In addition, they will fashion a vest that Kandu will wear to protect his body from the ground. Kandu's a great sport and he never complains but when he gets to playing his little chest turns bright red where it comes in contact with the floor. That can't be good.

We casted Kandu on thursday evening. We now have working model of him. He was a very good boy for the casting procedure. Never put up a stink. We are working on two projects for him. One is the "wheel" design to be used for his walks and travels. The other is a little pad to cover his chest. This will help protect him long term. We are hoping to fabricate and fit these devices this week. The family that he is staying with say that his is just the sweetest boy ever. He hasn't had any potty problems and is playing well the their yorkie.

Kandu and his guardian angels joined his foster mom and his forever family for a race at Washington Park. Kandu was sporting his preliminary hardware. Once the plastic model is perfected, a Duplicate will be made from new age material that's super tough and light weight. In the end, Kandu will have the basic hardware for lounging around the house and wheels that can be attached for long distances. His new dad asked Martin (Martin, Ami, and Kandu in the picture) to think about skis that could also be attached since Kandu's forever home will be in the mountains. Martin's imagination and genius will change the course of Kandu's life!

Above are some pictures of Kandu's preliminary hardware. When all is done, there will be a device like this for indoor travel but it will be made from a more permanent material. He will have a wheel mechanism for long distance travel. Martin and Ken are even brainstorming a mono-ski that can be attached for getting around in the snow.

Kandu went on to his new family, Ken, Melissa and Bob (Kandu's new brother). Bob, Ken and Melissa have always done service work for Healing Friends and now Kandu will help them. This is a dream come true for all of us who know that Kandu has so much to give.

Kandu's Dad, Ken Kandu's new dad, Ken will be working with Kandu to learn the ropes in his new home and helping him to get the most from his new legs. In addition, he will be putting up a website so he can keep us all posted on Kandu's progress. We will post information about Kandu's new website as it becomes available.

Kandu and Linda Hoffman Kandu and I would like to extend our personal thanks to each and every person that has taken time to care. Kandu is a very special little dog that steals the heart of every person that he meets. Thanks to your generous donations, Kandu will finally be able to lift his head to eat, play without damaging his chest, and run with the rest of the dogs. We are amazed at how many people extended offers to take this little fella into their homes. Thanks to all of you for considering this monumental undertaking.

I am excited that Kandu is finally in a situation where he will have his own needs met and can start giving back to the world. His friend Sandee is warm and fed and sleeping indoors with a person who loves her very much. Thanks to all of you for making this happen. Linda Hoffman.

Kandu Our mission has been a success!

We have been able to raise the funds to manufacture a device that has enabled Kandu to get his head up off of the ground. He can now move about freely without causing damage to his chest!

Thanks to everyone who contributed so generously to Kandu's cause.
